Children take over the council chamber

A group of children have been making the decisions at Ealing Town Hall today as part of the events to celebrate Local Democracy Week.

Year six children from John Perryn Primary School took on the roles of mayor, committee clerk and councillors at a mock council meeting in the council chamber.

The children voted on three real proposals for small improvements they would like to see made at the school.

They voted in favour of setting up a snack shop, selling treats and healthy snacks.

The council surprised them, at the end of the meeting, with a cheque for £250 to put towards setting up the shop.

Earlier this week Acton High School hosted a political speed-dating event where sixth form students took turns to grill Ealing councillors.

There will also be a junior version of Question Time in the council chamber today (13 October) where teenagers will fire questions about the recent riots and the London 2012 Olympic games at a panel of local politicians.

School pupils across the borough are also taking part in the Mayor’s Competition by sending in pictures, poems and written work to explain what they would do if they were Mayor for the day.

The winning entries will be picked by Mayor of Ealing, Councillor John Gallagher and will be presented with shopping vouchers.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Julian Bell said: "Young people can make a real difference to our community and are the voters, and maybe even the politicians, of the future."
